Fashion and Arts Week 2011 dressed up downtown Clearwater in style - Creative Loafing

Feb. 8 kicked off Fashion and Arts Week, an event designed to bring new life to the beautiful Cleveland Street District.

Strolling the sidewalk on that balmy evening, one could hear music wafting from every lighted doorway and relaxed conversation from every outdoor table.

A good first stop was the new studio of Craig Taylor (pictured right), whose world-famous shirts have been worn by Oprah and other notables. His designs hung from racks in colorful disarray, lining the brick walls and reflecting off the strings of lights in the windowsills. Visitors strolled throughout the small rooms, stopping to ask a question of the designer, whose breezy nature and ready smile made him as easy to approach as an old friend.

VIDEO: Laura and Lisa of the Clearwater Designer Co-Op on Fashion and Arts Week, Craig Taylor, and the Downtown Clearwater Renaissance

As much as we love sample sales, fabulous parties and yummy catering, Fashion and Arts Week has a more intellectual purpose than throwing a big shindig - to throw the spotlight on Downtown Clearwater and give our restaurants, boutiques, business owners picturesque views of Old Clearwater Bay, and quaint street scaping some much needed exposure. (Although, we do love a big shindig).

Laura and Lisa, two hardworking members of the Clearwater Designer Co-Op, sit down and talk about how fashion designer, Clearwater resident, and Fashion and Arts Week participant Craig Taylor has contributed to the cultural rebirth of several other communities you just might have heard of.
